Your firm has been on the same street in Benalmádena for over a decade. The clients you have are happy, they pay on time, they pass your name to a friend now and then, and that has been enough. Then the friend moves away, or a freelancer who has just registered in Arroyo de la Miel searches "accountant near me" on their phone — and the name that appears three times before yours belongs to an office that opened last year. You haven't lost clients by doing bad work. You're failing to win new ones because you're not where the conversation now starts. Here's what you can change on your Google listing and on your website so that stops happening.
The day word of mouth stopped being enough
A recommendation is still the best way into an accounting firm: nobody hands their bookkeeping to the first name on a list. But a recommendation no longer travels alone, because modern word of mouth always ends with a Google search. Someone mentions you, the other person types your firm's name — and if nothing clear comes up, or they find a listing with two blurry photos and no opening hours, trust cools before the first call.
- Recommendations get checked on a phone. Before calling, people look up your Google listing, scan the stars and check whether the reviews are recent. An empty listing weakens even a warm recommendation.
- New clients rarely arrive by referral at all. A freelancer who has just registered, or a British family buying a flat in Torremuelle, doesn't know anyone in town: they search Google and pick from the first three map results.
- The competition isn't better — it's more visible. Benalmádena has firms ranking ahead of yours without more years or more experience. They have simply worked on their listing and their reviews.
One example: a practice in Arroyo de la Miel that runs payroll for a dozen hospitality businesses along the coast and has never asked anyone for a review. Another: a small hotel in Benalmádena Costa switches accountants in March and searches "accounting firm for hotels Benalmádena". If your listing never mentions hotels or hospitality, that search will probably never show you — even though it describes exactly what you do.
Your Google listing, field by field
The listing is your office door on Google and, very often, the only thing someone sees before calling. You don't need to rebuild it: you need to fill it in with intent.
- The right primary category. "Tax advisor" or "Accountant" as your main category, and secondary ones only if you genuinely offer them: payroll, bookkeeping, immigration paperwork. A wrong category makes you compete for searches that aren't yours.
- Services with names of their own. Instead of a generic list, write services such as "Payroll and social security for small businesses", "Self-employed registration", "Income tax returns" or "Bookkeeping for hospitality businesses". Every service is a chance to appear in a specific search.
- Real opening hours, season included. Summer and Easter change the rhythm of the town: if you work by appointment in August or close in the afternoons, say so. Wrong hours earn you a missed call and a one-star review.
- Photos of the actual office. The façade from the street, the entrance, the waiting area, the desks and the team. Ten or fifteen well-lit phone photos beat any stock image: someone about to trust you with their accounts wants to see where you'll keep them.
- Questions and answers built from real doubts. Post the ones you hear most yourself: whether you work in English, whether you handle non-residents, whether you take on small limited companies, what documents to bring, whether you do video calls. Each answered question saves a call and adds relevance.
- Posts and attributes. Tick the attributes that apply (wheelchair accessible, appointment required, card payments) and publish once a month with the tax season dates or a deadline reminder. Step-by-step detail is in our guide to the Google Business Profile listing.
The website: explain what you do without forcing a call
Plenty of firms have a website that looks like an empty shop window: a logo, three icons labelled "Trust", "Professionalism" and "Closeness", and a contact form. Someone arriving from the map needs something more concrete in the first ten seconds.
- One sentence saying what you do and for whom. "Tax and payroll advice for freelancers and small businesses in Benalmádena" communicates far more than "Comprehensive solutions for your company".
- One page per service. A page for freelancers, one for payroll, one for income tax returns. These are the pages that can rank for specific searches and the ones that answer real questions.
- An English version. Benalmádena has a long-established British, Irish and Nordic community, plus non-resident owners renting out flats along the coast. If you don't speak their language, whoever does takes that business.
- A phone number and WhatsApp visible at the top. Plus a "get directions" map link, because your office may be in Arroyo de la Miel while your client is in Torremuelle or Benalmádena Pueblo.
- Links both ways. From your website to your Google listing and from the listing back to the website. That round trip strengthens the relationship between the two and helps Google see they describe the same business.
If the site needs a refresh, our web design in Marbella service starts at €180 + VAT for a single page and €350 + VAT for up to five pages, usually delivered in 5 to 7 working days once we have your text and images.
What it costs and what you can expect
We work with published, fixed prices and no surprise quotes. The Local Pack is €150/month + VAT and focuses on your Google listing: categories, services, hours, photos, questions and answers, plus support with reviews. The Content Pack is €250/month + VAT and adds SEO articles for the searches in your niche. Neither has a minimum term: if a month doesn't make sense any more, you stop.
Do the honest maths: the Local Pack at €150/month + VAT adds up, over a year, to one recurring accounting client. If one freelancer joins you in that time and stays for several years, the investment has paid for itself. What we can't promise you is an exact timeline: listing improvements often show before website rankings do, but it usually depends on the competition in your area and how complete your listing was to begin with.
Why Solaris
We're a small agency in Marbella working with local businesses across the Costa del Sol, accounting firms included. What sets us apart isn't glamorous, but it matters:
- Fixed, published prices. €150/month + VAT for the Local Pack and €250/month + VAT for the Content Pack. No "request a quote" to learn the basics.
- No lock-in. Not on local SEO, not on web design. If the work isn't earning its keep, there's no reason to tie you down.
- Specialists in Costa del Sol local businesses. We know the difference between competing in Benalmádena Pueblo and along the coast, and that a firm here lives on freelancers, small companies and foreign residents.
- We help with Google Maps and reviews, where the phone call is won, and with the website that backs it up. For the broader picture, start with local SEO in Marbella.
