Open Google on your phone and search "plumber Benahavís" or "restaurant Benahavís". Above the normal results you'll see a block with a map and three businesses: name, stars, phone and directions. That block is the local pack, and for a local business it's worth more than any ad. The bad news: only three fit. The good news: understanding how it works already puts you ahead of others. Here's the honest version.
What the local pack is (and why it's not your website)
The local pack —sometimes called the "map pack" or "the three map listings"— is the block of map results Google shows for searches with local intent. It doesn't list web pages: it lists businesses, pulled from their Google Business Profile listings. It's different from your website ranking, even though the two feed each other.
- It appears above the organic results. For searches like "near me" or "[service] Benahavís", the local pack gets the first look, sometimes above your website.
- It's decided by the listing, not the website. Even without a website you can appear in the pack if your listing is well looked after.
- Three fit, and you compete with your neighbours. You're not competing with all of Spain: you're competing with businesses in your sector within your radius.
- The business next door is playing too. Every time someone completes their listing or earns a review, the balance shifts.
What factors influence appearing in the local pack
Google doesn't publish the exact recipe, but the signals that carry weight are known. This table compares a well-kept listing with a neglected one:
| Signal | Well-kept listing | Neglected listing |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | The one that truly describes your service | Generic or wrong |
| Details (name, address, phone) | Complete and consistent with the website | Missing or different depending where you look |
| Opening hours | Up to date, holidays included | Missing or outdated |
| Reviews | Recent, all replied to | Few, old or unanswered |
| Photos and posts | Own, varied and current | None, or stock images |
| Proximity and relevance | Consistent with your real service area | Disconnected from the user's search |
The signals you actually control
You don't control proximity, but you do control most signals. These are the levers we work with:
Your listing, in detail
- Correct primary and secondary categories
- Name, address and phone identical everywhere
- Complete, current opening hours
- Services, attributes and a description with your real keywords
Activity and trust
- Recent, replied-to reviews, bad ones included
- Your own photos and regular posts
- Using messages and the listing's questions and answers
- Consistent links between your website and your listing
Mistakes that keep you out of the pack
- Choosing the wrong primary category. It's the signal that most shapes which searches you show up for. Getting it wrong is like not existing.
- Having a different name, address or phone depending where you look. Google reads inconsistency as low trust.
- Leaving reviews unanswered. It's not just the rating that counts; so does showing you engage with what people say.
- A frozen listing. With no new photos, no posts and stale hours, it signals the business has stalled.
- Scattering your service area. If you set a radius that isn't real, you weaken your relevance where you actually serve.

What to expect (and what not to)
Nobody honest can promise you the top of the local pack, and be wary of anyone who does. What you can expect from serious, consistent work:
- More presence on the map for searches in your area.
- More clicks, calls and direction requests from your listing.
- A better reputation with fresher, better-managed reviews.
- Progressive results: the first changes usually show within weeks and consolidation takes months.
Why Solaris
- Specialists in local businesses on the Costa del Sol. We work the map in Benahavís and the surrounding area, and we understand the local competition.
- Fixed, published prices. €150 or €250 a month + VAT, with no invoice surprises.
- No lock-in. You stay because it works, not because a contract ties you.
- We also look at your reviews and your presence in the pack, not just isolated listing data.
