Having a Google listing is not the same as showing up on Google. They're two different things, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake a local business makes. You can have had your listing for years and still be invisible when someone searches for your service in your area. In this guide we explain what Google Business Profile (the old Google My Business) is, what you really control, which mistakes are costing you customers and how to know, with data, whether your listing is working.
What Google Business Profile (the Google listing) is
Google Business Profile (GBP), formerly known as Google My Business (GMB), is the free listing that represents your business inside Google. It's that card that appears to the right of the search results and on the map, with your name, address, opening hours, phone number, photos, category and reviews. For a local business, it's often the first point of contact with a new customer.
What it's really for, beyond merely "existing":
- Being found on the map and in the "local pack". When someone searches for a nearby service, Google shows three featured listings. Being there is the difference between getting the call or the business next door getting it.
- Building trust instantly. Opening hours, photos and reviews decide within seconds whether someone contacts you or keeps searching.
- Making contact easy. The listing itself lets people call, get directions, message you or visit your website without leaving Google.
The parts you CAN control
Google doesn't reveal its algorithm, but it does give you control over many fields. Working on them well is the part that is up to you:
- The name. It should be your real business name, not stuffed with keywords. Why: keyword-stuffed names are often penalised or edited by Google and damage trust.
- The primary and secondary categories. They tell Google what searches you're relevant for. Why: getting the primary category wrong can keep you out of the searches that actually bring you customers.
- The service area. Defines the areas you cover if you don't work from a physical shop. Why: it helps you show up for searches within your real operating radius.
- Opening hours. Kept up to date and consistent with holidays. Why: wrong hours frustrate customers and lead to negative reviews.
- Attributes. Parking, accessibility, outdoor seating, card payments… Why: they're filters people use to decide and help you appear in specific searches.
- Photos. Of the premises, the team and your work. Why: a listing with its own photos signals activity and tends to get more clicks.
- Products and posts. News, offers and featured services. Why: they keep the listing alive and give Google freshness signals.
- Questions and answers. You can publish and answer frequent questions. Why: they resolve objections before the call and improve the user experience.
Empty listing, complete listing, active listing
Having a listing created is not the same as having it working. This table sums up the difference:
| What we compare | Empty listing | Complete listing | Active listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic data | Only name and address | Every field filled in | Complete and reviewed |
| Visibility | Almost none | Can appear for direct searches | Can gain presence in its area |
| Trust | Low: looks abandoned | Medium: signals seriousness | High: photos, reviews and replies |
| Conversion | User leaves | The occasional call | Consistent calls, routes and clicks |
| Maintenance | None | Occasional | Ongoing, month after month |
Typical mistakes that sink a listing
These are the slip-ups we see most often in local businesses. If any of them sounds familiar, it's a quick win:
Wrong category
The most common error. If you pick the wrong primary category, Google doesn't know which searches to show you for. A category review is usually the first thing we fix.
Inconsistent NAP
When your name, address and phone (NAP) don't match across your listing, website and directories, Google gets contradictory signals. Data consistency is the foundation.
No photos of your own
A listing without images of the premises, team or work looks inactive. Your own photos can help you generate more clicks and trust.
Out-of-date hours
Outdated hours, especially on holidays, cause wasted trips and negative reviews. Keeping them current is basic and cheap.
Reviews and replies: your reputation at stake
Reviews are the part of the listing that most influences the customer's decision and one of the signals Google watches. Having them isn't enough: you have to manage them. Asking satisfied customers systematically makes the difference versus waiting for them to arrive on their own.
And always reply: to the good ones with thanks, to the bad ones calmly and with solutions. Replying professionally can help you win back an unhappy customer and shows the person who doesn't know you yet that there's someone on the other end. If you want to go deeper, we cover it in our guide to Google Maps reviews.
How to measure whether your listing works
Google gives you a performance panel with concrete data. They're not opinions, they're figures:
- Searches that find you. How often you appear for discovery and brand searches. Why: if the number rises, your listing is becoming more relevant for your area.
- Calls and direction requests. The most direct actions from the listing. Why: they measure real intent to contact you or visit you.
- Clicks to your website and messages. Traffic leaving Google towards your channels. Why: they connect the listing with the rest of your business.
- Month-on-month trend. The trend compared with previous months. Why: what matters isn't a one-off spike but momentum that holds.
