Think about the last time you searched for something on your phone: "dentist in Marbella", "physio in San Pedro" or "locksmith in Estepona". Before the usual results, Google shows you a block with a map and, typically, three businesses with their rating, their reviews and a button to call or get directions. That block is the local pack, and it's the first thing most people look at. We explain exactly what it is, why it matters for your business and what you can do to appear in it — no fluff and no promises nobody can keep.
What the Google local pack is
The local pack is the highlighted block Google shows at the top of the page when it detects a search with local intent: someone looking for a service or business near where they are. It usually includes a map and three listings with the name, average rating, number of reviews, address, opening hours and photos of each business.
That block is fed by each business's Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). Google decides who appears by combining three factors: relevance (whether your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well rated you are). It can't be bought: it's worked on. It is, in fact, the most visible part of local SEO.
To understand it properly, it's worth clarifying what it is not:
- It's not paid advertising. The listing is free; ads are marked and are a different thing (we compare them below).
- It's not traditional SEO. Here the goal is the map, not ranking a page on your website in the organic results.
- It's not magic or a shortcut. It's constant work on your data, reviews and local signals.
Why it matters for a local business
For a local business — a clinic, a restaurant, an office, a workshop — the local pack is often the only shop window a customer looks at before deciding. On mobile it takes up almost the whole first screen, above the organic results, and it's designed to get you to act: call, get directions or open the listing.
If you don't show up there, for anyone searching "near me" you simply don't exist: the customer doesn't scroll through the map to find you, they choose from what they see in that first glance.
- The search is local and in a hurry. The customer wants something nearby, right now. If you don't show up on the map, you don't make their list.
- The rating and reviews decide. Before calling, people look at the stars. A well-kept listing instantly conveys trust.
- Mobile rules. Most of these searches happen on a phone, where the map is the first thing you see.
Local pack vs organic results vs ads
They look similar, but they're not the same. This table helps you see it at a glance:
| What we compare | Local pack | Organic results | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it shows | A map and three business listings | Links to web pages | Ads marked "Sponsored" |
| How you get it | Working on the listing and local signals | Working on content and the website | Paying per click |
| Cost | Free to appear; worked on with consistency | Free to appear; requires SEO work | You pay every time someone clicks |
| When you notice it | Weeks or months | Months | Immediate |
| What happens when you stop | It gradually weakens | It gradually weakens | Disappears when you stop paying |
What you can do to get into the local pack
There's no button that puts you in there, but there are a series of signals Google values. These are the four that carry the most weight:
A complete, verified listing
Correct name, address, phone number, opening hours, website and description, with no contradictions. It's the base everything else is built on.
The right category
It's what tells Google which searches you're relevant for. A poorly chosen category can leave you out of the searches that matter to you.
Reviews: volume, rating and freshness
Ask for reviews naturally, respond to all of them — the negative ones too — and keep them fresh. The rating and volume carry a lot of weight.
Consistent local signals
Make sure your name, address and phone number match across your website and directories, with consistent mentions of your business in the area.
How much it costs (if you delegate it)
You can do it yourself, but if you'd rather have someone manage it for you, at Solaris we work with two fixed plans, no lock-in and no small print:
Local Pack
€150 /month + VAT
- Optimisation of your Google Business Profile
- Review management and responses
- Posts and photos
- Monthly report
Content Pack
€250 /month + VAT
- Everything in the Local Pack
- Monthly articles on your website
- A stronger online presence
- Monthly report
Do the maths: a single new client a month can cover the plan and then some, and anything beyond that is direct return.
What results you can expect
Let's be clear: nobody can guarantee you'll appear in the local pack, and you should be wary of anyone who promises you the top spot. What serious, consistent work can bring you:
- More visibility in the searches for your area.
- More calls and route requests directly from your listing.
- A better reputation with more reviews, better managed.
- Progressive results: the first changes are usually noticeable within weeks, and consolidation takes months.
It's not a switch that flips on all at once, but momentum that you build and maintain.
