How to appear on Google Maps: a guide for businesses

October 10, 2026 7-minute read

You run a bar, a hair salon, a clinic or a shop on the Costa del Sol. Someone picks up their phone, types "near me" and Google shows them a map with three businesses. If yours isn't there, it doesn't matter how good you are: to that person, you don't exist. Appearing on Google Maps isn't a mystery or a lucky break — it's a well-built listing worked on consistently. Here's the step-by-step, with no fluff.

Being on Maps is not the same as appearing on Maps

This is the confusion that holds many businesses back. They are two different things:

  • Being on Maps means having a listing. It exists, with your name and your pin on the map, and anyone searching for your business by name can find it.
  • Appearing on Maps means showing up when someone searches for what you offer — "restaurant in Marbella", "physio in Estepona" — without knowing you. There you compete with everyone else, and category, reviews, photos and local signals come into play.

This guide covers both: first getting you on the map, then working to make sure you're seen.

Step 1: create or claim your listing

It all starts with Google Business Profile, the free listing that feeds Maps. Sign in with your Google account and search for your business name. Two things can happen:

  • It doesn't exist. Create it with your real business name, with no keywords added. "Lucía Hair Salon", not "Lucía Hair Salon Marbella cheap".
  • It already exists. A customer or Google itself probably created it. Click "Claim this business" and verify that it's yours.

Don't even think about creating a second listing for the same business: duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google.

Step 2: verify and complete it 100%

Without verification, your listing doesn't count. Google will ask for a video or a postcard depending on the case. Once verified, a complete listing builds more trust and tends to perform better than a half-finished one. Fill in everything:

  • Name, address and phone exactly, matching your website and social profiles.
  • Opening hours that are real, with holidays kept up to date. Wrong hours drive customers away.
  • Main category and secondary ones chosen well (more below).
  • Description of your business, with what you do and where.
  • Useful attributes: outdoor seating, wheelchair access, card payments, wifi…

Step 3: choose the right category and area

The category is what tells Google which searches you're relevant for. Getting it wrong makes you invisible even if everything else is perfect. If you're a dental clinic, the main one should be "Dentist", not "Clinic". Secondary categories cover the finer points.

If you serve customers at their location or travel to them — a plumber, a mobile mechanic, someone giving lessons at home — set your service area: the towns where you work. Use real areas and don't go too wide; it's better to cover your radius well than to pretend you reach all of Andalusia.

Step 4: photos, reviews and posts

These three elements are the engine of visibility and trust:

  • Recent, real photos. Storefront, interior, product, team. Google values activity; a listing with new photos stays alive.
  • Reviews. Ask for them naturally after each service and reply to all of them, including the critical ones. Replying well to a negative review can work in your favour. If you want to go deeper, there's a full guide on how to get Google reviews.
  • Posts. News, offers or changes to your hours. They signal that the listing is active.

Basic listing vs a worked-on listing

It's the difference between a forgotten card and a channel that brings in customers:

What we compare Basic listing only A worked-on listing
Details Name, phone and little else 100% complete: hours, attributes, description
Category Random or by default A clear main one and well-chosen secondary ones
Photos One or none, outdated Recent, real and refreshed
Reviews Trickle in, never answered Actively requested and all replied to
Activity The listing is never touched Regular posts and updates
Result It exists, but is barely seen Can help you appear in searches in your area

The 5 steps at a glance

If you want to get started today, this is the order that works:

1

Create or claim

Open your listing with the real business name. Claim any that already exists and avoid duplicates.

2

Verify

Complete Google's verification process: without it the listing never consolidates.

3

Complete it 100%

Hours, description, attributes and correct categories. All consistent with your website.

4

Add photos and reviews

Recent photos, reviews asked for and answered. This is what convinces the undecided customer.

Mistakes that sink your visibility

Almost all are avoidable, and expensive:

  • Keyword-stuffed name. Adding keywords to the name can lead to penalties; use the real name.
  • Inconsistent NAP. A different phone or address on your website, Maps and social profiles confuses Google. It's the foundation of local SEO.
  • An abandoned listing. No new photos, no posts and unanswered reviews mean you lose freshness.
  • A fake address or a giant service area. Promising what you don't cover brings visits that don't convert and negative signals.
  • Ignoring bad reviews. A professional reply defuses the damage; silence amplifies it.

How Google Maps relates to your website

The listing can be worked on without a website, but if you have a site, make sure it pulls in the same direction. The contact details, category and areas on your website and your listing must match, and linking your site from your profile strengthens both. A website with pages for your services and your area complements what the map does: it gives you a space to explain, convince and convert. Frequently asked questions

Creating and verifying your listing can take a few days. Showing up more often in searches around your area is a matter of weeks of consistent work, and consolidation takes months. It depends on your sector and the competition.
Yes. Creating and managing your Google Business Profile listing is free. What makes the difference is the ongoing work of optimising it, which you can do yourself or delegate.
No, the listing works without a website. If you have one, it is worth aligning the name, address, phone and categories so everything reinforces the same thing.
You can handle the basics, such as completing your details and replying to reviews. What takes time and consistency — posting, asking for reviews, monitoring — is best delegated so it doesn't end up half done.
Being on it means having a listing and being found by your name. Appearing means showing up when someone searches for your service without knowing you, competing with other local businesses based on category, reviews and local signals.
At Solaris, €150/month + VAT for the Local Pack, or €250/month + VAT for the Content Pack if you also want monthly articles on your website. No lock-in.
