A gym in Torremolinos is not competing with the one on the next street: it competes with the map. When someone searches «gym in Torremolinos» from La Carihuela, they open Google Maps, check who is a five-minute walk away, what rating they have and which photos they show. If your listing is half-finished, that click goes elsewhere. Here is what gets worked on, and in what order.
Four searches you get to choose
Before touching anything, write down the four or five searches you want to be found for. For a gym in Torremolinos they usually fall into three groups: generic («gym in Torremolinos»), neighbourhood («gym in La Carihuela») and service («personal training Torremolinos» or «weights room»). If your listing tries to compete for all of them with a single category, Google has no idea which one to show you for.
Example of how it works: a gym near Playamar with only the «Gym» category showed up for generic searches, but not when someone asked for «personal training». Adding the secondary category and creating a page for that service on its site gave Google a different signal for that search. It is not magic: it is vocabulary.
The listing: what actually carries weight
- Primary and secondary categories. The primary one says what you live on; add secondaries only if you really offer them (personal training, group classes, sports physio).
- Opening hours by shift. A gym open 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and closed on Sunday afternoons needs that configured, not a «open 24h» that is not true.
- Attributes and services. Showers, lockers, parking, spinning classes, personal trainer. These are the boxes customers compare before calling.
- Real photos of the floor. Three or four shots of the room in natural light, the free-weights area and the machines say more than any paragraph.
Torremolinos neighbourhoods: it is not one single town
People do not search Torremolinos the same way from La Carihuela as from El Bajondillo or Los Álamos. Someone living in the centre looks for «gym near me»; a summer visitor looks for «gym with classes in La Carihuela». The listing holds one address, so the neighbourhood work goes on your website: one page per area with the specific service, the real timetable and how to get there, not the same page with the area name swapped.
If your gym sits in the centre, on the main avenue or next to the commuter rail station, say so in the description: being close to public transport is a strong argument in tourist areas.
January and July: two seasons, two mindsets
In January new-year resolutions spike; in July it is visitors who want to keep their routine while on holiday. They are two different audiences: in January price and evening hours matter most; in summer, flexibility and whether you sell single classes. Neither is solved by the listing alone, but the listing is where the call is decided.
- Get the listing ready in December. By the time searches rise, you should already have January hours, visible prices and fresh photos.
- In summer, answer the obvious questions. How much is a single class, whether you run beach training, whether people can pay by the week.
Reviews: how to ask properly
Ask for the review right after a good experience, not through a mass WhatsApp three months later. The natural moment is on the way out of a class or when someone renews their membership, with a direct link to the listing. And answer all of them: the one complaining about the air conditioning and the one praising a trainer.
About ranking, better to be honest: nobody can guarantee you the first position. Google explains that the local pack depends on relevance, distance and prominence (how local ranking works). What you can do is make sure that, when you do appear, the listing convinces.
What to check every month
- Calls and direction requests. These are the two actions the listing measures and the ones that turn into visits to the gym.
- The searches you appear for. If you suddenly show up for «cheap gym», check what changed in the category or the description.
- New reviews and unanswered ones. A reply left pending for two weeks shows.
What it costs to hand it over
The Local Pack is €150/month + VAT and covers the Google Maps listing only: categories, hours, photos, services and review management. The Content Pack is €250/month + VAT and adds SEO articles to your site, which is what lets you compete for «gym in La Carihuela» or «personal training Torremolinos» with a page of your own. Neither has a lock-in.
Honest ROI line: a new member at €40/month covers almost three months of the Local Pack. If the listing brings you one member a month, the maths works; if it does not, we review it.
You can see how the local pack works in this Google Maps guide and the plans on the Local Pack page.
