Local SEO for small businesses: a guide

September 30, 2026 7-minute read

You run a business in your neighbourhood, you do good work and word of mouth carries you. But when someone searches for what you offer on their phone, the ones showing up first are others. The difference is rarely luck: it's local SEO, steady work on three fronts —your Google listing, your website and your reviews— that decides whether you get found or skipped. This guide covers what it is, what you can do yourself and what it costs to delegate.

What local SEO for small businesses is

Local SEO is the set of actions that help your business appear when someone searches for a service near where they are. It isn't one single thing: it's the sum of three pieces that reinforce each other.

  • Your Google listing (Google Business Profile). The card that shows on Google Maps with your name, address, phone, hours, photos, category and reviews. It's the centrepiece of local SEO.
  • Your website. It backs up what your listing says. Having your details match across both is a signal of consistency Google values.
  • Your reviews. Volume, rating and freshness. They're what a customer sees before calling and much of what Google uses to gauge your prominence.

When these three pieces line up, your business carries more relevance for searches in your area. You can go deeper in our guide to local SEO.

With SEO vs without SEO: what actually changes

Let's put it in two columns for an at-a-glance view. This isn't magic, it's about how your customer finds you and what each scenario costs.

What we compare Local business with SEO Local business without SEO
How you're foundBy searching your service nearby: you show on the mapOnly by word of mouth or if they already know you
Where you appearGoogle Maps local pack and map searchesOff the first screen, or nowhere at all
What it costsConsistent monthly work (or delegated from €150/month + VAT)Nothing in cash, but plenty in customers lost to the next business
How long it takesFirst changes in weeks; consolidation takes monthsIt won't improve on its own
Who decidesYou work your local signalsChance and the inertia of your area

Mind you: SEO doesn't secure a specific position and there's no way to secure one. Google combines relevance, distance and prominence, and distance is beyond your control. What you can do is work on everything else so that, when someone searches nearby, you stand a better chance of showing up.

What you CAN do yourself

Before thinking about delegating anything, there are five tasks any small business can do without technical know-how. Nail these and you're already starting from solid ground.

Complete your Google listing

Claim your listing, pick the right main category and fill in name, address, phone, hours and description. The fewer gaps left, the better Google understands you.

Ask for reviews

When a job is done, ask for the rating with a direct link. Reply to all of them, negative ones included: a polite reply says more than the complaint itself.

Website with correct data

If you have a site, make its name, address and phone match your listing exactly. Inconsistencies plant doubt.

Local content

Post about your area: a job done in a nearby neighbourhood, a new service, a useful tip. Content that mentions your area strengthens your local bond.

Answer questions

Many listings allow questions and answers. Answer customer queries about hours, prices or availability before they're even asked: it clarifies and adds activity to your listing.

Local SEO, web SEO and ads: not the same thing

It's easy to mix them up, since all three help people find you. But they chase different goals and it's worth knowing what to expect from each.

  • Local SEO. Its goal is the map: Google Maps' local pack and searches with local intent. It's worked mainly on your Google listing.
  • Web SEO. It aims to rank your website's pages in organic results. Slower and more technical, but its reach doesn't depend on distance.
  • Ads (Google Ads). Appearing at the top by paying per click. It gives immediate visibility, but disappears the moment you stop paying. Good as a short-term push, not as a foundation.

A local business usually needs local SEO most; web SEO and ads are added when you want to cover more ground. If you're just starting and have no site yet, see how it combines with web design.

Mistakes that hold a small business back

Some mistakes repeat and, without being catastrophic, chip away at your visibility month after month:

  • A slow website. If it takes forever to load, the visitor leaves before reading a word. Speed affects both the experience and how Google rates you.
  • Inconsistent data. Your phone on your listing, your site and an old directory must be the same. Every discrepancy is a doubt you hand to Google.
  • Measuring nothing. If you don't check how many calls or direction requests you get from your listing, you won't know if what you do works or what to change.
  • Not replying. Leaving reviews unanswered, especially bad ones, projects neglect. The listing looks like a ghost and the customer notices.
  • Quitting halfway. Starting with enthusiasm and stopping after two months is worse than not starting: the signals cool down.

What it costs to delegate local SEO

If you don't have the time to keep it up, at Solaris we run it with two fixed plans, no lock-in and published prices (+ VAT):

Local Pack

€150 /month + VAT

  • Google Maps listing optimisation
  • Review management and replies
  • Posts and photos
  • Monthly report

Content Pack

€250 /month + VAT

  • Everything in the Local Pack
  • Monthly articles on your website
  • Strengthening your online presence
  • Monthly report

Do the maths: one new customer worth €150 a month already covers the Local Pack; everything beyond that is direct return.

Frequently asked questions

It's the work that helps your business appear when someone searches for a service near where they are. It rests on three pieces: your Google Maps listing, your website and your reviews, aligned to reinforce the same information about who you are and where you work.
Yes. Your Google Maps listing can be worked on without a website and it's the centrepiece of local SEO. If you later build a site, we align it with your listing so the data matches and everything reinforces the same thing.
You can do the basics: complete your listing, ask for reviews, make sure your website has the right data and answer your customers' questions. What takes time and consistency —posting, monitoring, replying every week— is what's worth delegating so it doesn't fall apart.
At Solaris we have two fixed plans with no lock-in: the Local Pack at €150/month + VAT, focused on the Google listing, and the Content Pack at €250/month + VAT, which adds monthly articles on your website. The prices are published from the start.
The first changes usually show within weeks, especially if the listing was incomplete, but consolidation takes months. It depends on your sector and the competition in your area, and nobody can guarantee a specific position: Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence.
Inconsistent data: a different phone on your listing, website and an old directory, or out-of-date hours. Before chasing complicated fixes, check that all your information is identical, complete and current in every place you appear.
