Imagine a customer opens Google Maps, types "coffee near me" or "plumber near me" and sees your business with a complete listing, real photos and good reviews. Now imagine you don't show up: that customer picks the place next door without a second thought. Appearing on Google Maps isn't magic or paid ads — it's a process with concrete steps you can follow yourself. In this guide we explain what it is, which steps to take and what actually influences your visibility, with Solaris pricing if you'd rather we do it for you.
What appearing on Google Maps is (and what it isn't)
Appearing on Google Maps means your business shows up on the map when someone searches for something related to you in your area. The core is your Google Business Profile: the free card with your name, address, phone, opening hours, photos, category and reviews that Google shows both on the map and in search results.
To save you time, let's also be clear about what it isn't:
- It isn't building a website. Your Google listing is independent; you can be on the map without a website (though having one helps).
- It isn't paying for ads. The listing is free. Google Ads are a different thing and disappear the moment you stop paying.
- It isn't a promise of any specific position. Google ranks results on three signals you'll see below: relevance, distance and prominence.
- It isn't a one-time job. It's constant work: keeping your details up to date, posting and replying to reviews.
Complete listing vs incomplete listing
Your listing is the first thing Google looks at to decide whether to show you. This table compares a well-kept listing with a half-finished one:
| Aspect | Complete listing | Incomplete listing |
|---|---|---|
| Category | The right one (e.g. "Coffee shop") | Generic or missing |
| Description | Explains what you offer and to whom | Empty or copied from elsewhere |
| Photos | Real and up to date | None or stock images |
| Opening hours | Up to date, including holidays | Outdated or empty |
| Reviews | Asked for and replied to | None or unanswered |
| Posts | Published regularly | Inactive for months |
How to appear on Google Maps step by step
These are the steps, in order. You don't have to do them all in one day, but you do need to keep at them:
1. Create your listing
Go to Google Business Profile, add your business and confirm the exact name, address and phone, with no variations.
2. Verify it's really you
Google will ask you to confirm ownership (by code, phone or video). Until it's verified, the listing won't show on the map.
3. Fill in category and description
Pick the category that best defines you and write a clear description of what you offer and to whom.
4. Upload real photos
Shopfront, interior, team and finished work: photos drive more clicks and engagement than any text.
5. Get reviews
Ask for them naturally after each service and reply to all of them, including the negative ones.
6. Post regularly
Offers, news and photos keep your listing active and tell Google your business is still alive.
How much it costs
You can do all of this yourself, for free. If you'd rather delegate it, at Solaris we work with two fixed plans, no lock-in and no fine print:
Local Pack
€150 /month + VAT
- Optimisation of your Google Maps listing
- Review management and replies
- Posts and photos
- Monthly report
Content Pack
€250 /month + VAT
- Everything in the Local Pack
- Monthly articles for your website
- Stronger online presence
- Monthly report
Do the maths: a single new customer a month that brings you €150 already covers the plan. Anything on top of that is direct return.
What results to expect (and what not)
Let's be honest: nobody can guarantee you a specific position on the map, and be wary of anyone who does. Google ranks results on three factors you only partly control:
- Relevance. How well your listing matches what the person is searching for. Here you can do a lot: category, description and photos.
- Distance. How close your business is to the searcher. You can't control it, but you can optimise for your area.
- Prominence. The authority Google gives you based on your reviews, activity and mentions. It builds over time.
What you can expect from serious, consistent work:
- More visibility in searches in your area if your listing is well kept and active.
- More calls and route requests directly from the listing.
- A better reputation with well-managed reviews.
- Progressive results. The first changes usually show in weeks, and consolidation takes months. It depends on your sector and competition.
It's not a switch you flip once: it's momentum you build and maintain.
